Smoke alarm compliance before 1 January 2027

Queensland has the toughest smoke alarm laws in the country, and the final deadline is close. By 1 January 2027, every existing home, townhouse and unit in the state must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms, so that when one alarm sounds, they all sound. Alarms are required on each storey, in every bedroom, and in the hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home.

Hardwired alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician, and the alarms need to meet Australian Standard AS3786-2014. If you own a Caloundra rental, or you are selling, the requirement already applies. We can assess what your property needs and install a compliant, interconnected system.

Older homes and salt air near the Caloundra coast

Homes close to the water at Golden Beach, Kings Beach, Moffat Beach and Dicky Beach deal with something inland suburbs do not: salt air. Over the years it corrodes outdoor switchboards, meter boxes and fittings, and that corrosion can turn into a real safety problem. Many original beachside homes also still run older wiring and switchboards that were never built for today’s appliances, air conditioners and pool equipment.

Signs worth a call include a safety switch that trips for no clear reason, warm or discoloured power points, lights that flicker, or a switchboard still fitted with old ceramic fuses. We can inspect the board, tell you plainly what needs attention, and quote any upgrade before we start.

New builds and renovations in Caloundra West and beyond

The growth suburbs behind the coast, Caloundra West, Aroona, Little Mountain, Meridan Plains, Bells Creek and the newer Pelican Waters estates, keep us busy with fresh installs. If you are building, extending or renovating, we take care of the wiring, extra circuits, downlights, ceiling fans, outdoor power and data, and we can rough in an EV charger point while the walls are open. Getting an electrician involved early usually saves money and rework later.

We also look after Caloundra businesses, from the shops and cafes along Bulcock Street to offices, warehouses and fit-outs across the industrial pockets. Commercial work includes new fit-out wiring, switchboard and lighting upgrades, exit and emergency lighting, test and tag, and ongoing maintenance. We work around trading hours where we can, so your doors stay open.

Frequently asked questions

In Queensland, only a licensed electrician can legally carry out most electrical work. Changing a light globe is fine. Anything involving the switchboard, wiring, power points or fixed appliances needs a licensed electrician. Beyond the law, unlicensed work can create fire and shock risks and may void your home insurance.

Repeated tripping usually means the safety switch is doing its job and has found a fault, often a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor circuit, or ageing wiring. It is common in older coastal homes. We trace the cause rather than just resetting it, so the same problem does not keep coming back.

A safety switch, or RCD, monitors the electricity flowing through a circuit and cuts the power in a fraction of a second if it detects a leak that could give someone a shock. It is different from a circuit breaker, which protects the wiring rather than people. Queensland homes are required to have safety switches, and we can check your board and fit them where they are missing.

For an older or beachside property, a safety inspection every couple of years is sensible, and sooner if you notice flickering lights, warm power points or frequent tripping. An inspection can pick up corrosion and worn wiring before they become a hazard.

Yes. We supply and install interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms that meet the current Queensland requirements, and we can advise on exactly what your home needs to be compliant before the 1 January 2027 deadline.
