Today you’re likely selling your daytime solar back to the grid for a few cents and buying it again in the evening at four or five times the price. Adding a battery to the solar you already have closes that gap, and you don’t need to start again with new panels. Here’s how a retrofit works, whether your system can take one, and whether it stacks up.
Why add a battery now
The maths has shifted. Feed-in tariffs have fallen right across Queensland, so exporting your surplus earns very little, while evening grid power keeps getting dearer. A battery lets you store your own daytime solar and use it at night instead of buying it back. On top of that, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program now takes roughly 30% off the cost of an eligible battery, and that discount steps down every year, so waiting costs you. Best of all, you keep the panels you’ve already paid for.
Can my existing system take a battery?
Usually, yes. It comes down to your inverter, and there are two paths. If you have a hybrid or battery-ready inverter, a battery can often be added directly. If you have a standard solar inverter, an all-in-one or AC-coupled battery works alongside almost any existing system, whatever brand or age your panels are. We check your inverter and switchboard and tell you honestly which path suits your home, rather than pushing you toward a full replacement you don’t need.
What size battery do you actually need
Bigger isn’t automatically better. An oversized battery costs more than it ever saves, and an undersized one leaves you buying grid power anyway. The right size comes down to how much power you use in the evening and overnight, and how much surplus your solar already produces. We work it out from your actual bills, not a rule of thumb.
What it costs, and will it pay off
Be wary of anyone quoting a fixed payback, because it depends on your usage and your tariff. As a guide, a retrofit battery tends to make the most sense if you already have solar producing a healthy surplus, you use a decent amount of power in the evening, and you’re on a high grid rate. For those homes, a battery can meaningfully cut what you buy from the grid, and the current rebate shortens the payback compared to a couple of years ago. If you’re out all day and use very little power at night, the case is weaker, and we’ll tell you so.
The blackout bonus
With a backup-capable setup, a retrofit battery also keeps your essentials running when the grid goes down, which matters on the Coast through storm season. Fridge, lights, internet and a few power points stay on while the street is dark. For a lot of households that peace of mind is a real part of the value, separate from the dollars saved.
